Lost in LOST

I thought I’d post a few thoughts on the current season of LOST. I’ve said for a long time that to me LOST is either going to be the most well written show in history or the biggest waste of time in my life. For me there’s no in between. I’ve never really considered myself a writer, but the more I learn about writing through my work in comics I’m starting to understand the process. As a good friend of mine likes to point out there are many patterns to screen writing and once you recognize them it’s hard to be surprised anymore. LOST remains exciting to me because it is so original and plays by it’s own rules. Unlike 24 for example, LOST still surprises me.
Another thing I like about LOST is how the story is driven by character. I actually care about the characters in the story. The same cannot be said for the 24 crew. This season I’ve also enjoyed the flash “sideways” or the parallel universe story line. What a creative and fresh perspective to take on the characters. My theory is that the creators are secretly showing us the end before the beginning. In other words, instead of building up huge anticipation for the final episode, I think they’ve been showing us the end all along this season by telling us where the characters wind up. Who knows for sure of course, but for now I’m lost in LOST.

I will have to agree with you whole heartedly. As far as the ending, I’m sill up in the air (no Flight 318 pun intended) about what is going on with the parallel. I was really thinking it was going to come down to a choice for them; stay on the island and protect it or go home and pick up where you left off. Then they thru Jack’s son into the mix and I got totally confused. It’s a very spectacular show, well thought out by Lindelof, Cruse, and Abrams; and the cast is phenomenal. I remember feeling as though I had lost a family member when Charlie sacrificed himself, and now I just yurn to take Claire in my arms and tell her it’s OK, that Aaron’s fine, and try to help her see the errors in her ways. It is truly a show that speaks to people on so many levels. I think I can honestly say there will never be a show with this much draw to it. I’ve been pulled into other shows (24, Supernatural, Alias, Fringe, Chuck, Life on Mars, etc.) where I’ve cared about the outcome of the cast, but never to the point that I dread when it appears one is going to die like I do with Lost. You’re right though about 24, it lost it’s impact on me after Season 3 and now it’s so predictable.
It’s going to be hard after the next 10 episodes, having to say goodbye to Lost. I just hope that when it’s done it’s done, and they don’t try to do any spin offs, or prequels, etc. It’s definitely been a very fun and exciting run. I’m glad I started watching it from day one. It’s definitely been an experience and not just another program.
